The Rolling Stones won the fifth Grammy Award of their illustrious career last night (2nd February), with The Beatles and Gojira also picking up rock and metal gongs. Released to widespread acclaim in October 2023, The Rolling Stones’ 24th studio record ‘Hackney Diamonds’ triumphed in the Best Rock Album category ahead of The Black Crowes’ ‘Happiness Bastards,’ Fontaines D.C.’s ‘Romance,’ Green Day’s ‘Saviors,’ Idles’ ‘Tangk,’ Jack White’s ‘No Name,’ and Pearl Jam’s ‘Dark Matter.’John Lennon’s son Sean Ono Lennon said when picking up the award: “Play The Beatles’ music to your kids,” he said. “I feel like the world can’t afford to forget about people like the Beatles. We need this music in the world; we need peace and love.”Despite their Best Rock Performance win, The Beatles missed out on the Grammy Award for Record of the Year, with rapper Kendrick Lamar picking up the honour for ‘Not Like Us.’ Elsewhere, French metal titans Gojira rightfully scooped the Best Metal Performance honour for their incredible version of ‘Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)’ that they performed at the rain-drenched Paris Olympic Games opening ceremony. Opera singer Marina Viotti, who performed ‘Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)’ with Gojira, also picked up the award with the band alongside Victor Le Masne, composer and musical director for Paris 2024 ceremonies.
